Since 2009 Withings has been manufacturing a range of life-style friendly health devices, each wirelessly connected through smart phones and computers to create a well-being eco-system comprising more than 100 partner apps and services.Smart Body Analyzer.jpg

Its most recent product, the Smart Body Analyzer integrates a new air quality sensor that checks the indoor air quality through metrics such as temperature and Co². The tracking app builds a Co²-level graph and makes users aware when important thresholds are reached.

The company has integrated 3D printing as a strategy early on in its rapid prototyping process, saving money, energy and eliminating risk.

Withings R&D mechanical engineer, Bastien Rechke said:

“In the development process, there are always phases during which we use 3D printing. It’s really helpful to have physical pieces in your own hands in order to make the right choices.

“It’s also a way for us to add the sense of touch to the visual perception. Designers often create a design just as we describe it to them, but after seeing it for real, we notice that we need to change something. In the long run, 3D printing processes have a profound impact on the quality of our products.”

Rapid prototyping also offers the means to evaluate if each piece fits its mechanical function before Withings launches the production of the tooling. Now that the technology has reached a precision of a few microns, prototypes are really close to what will come out of a mold in the conventional production process.

Rechke continued:

“In the past, it might have been difficult to reach such a precision in the prototyping phase, but it’s now not only possible but also really affordable. It might take a little bit of time at the beginning, but in the end it is something that can save us lots of time and money.

“Creating a mold is something that takes weeks and is still expensive, 3D printing helps us to be 100 percent sure of quality control before we launch the production.”

Due to scheduling delays during the development of its latest product, and 3D Printed Part Vs Injection Molding.JPGhaving dabbled with 3D printing previously, Withings turned to Sculpteo to see if the technology could create the necessarily components to hold the new air quality sensors on the circuit board.

Sculpteo specialises in selective laser sintering and 3D prints from polymer power.

Mechanical engineer of the R&D team Jean-Raphael Ouin commented:

“We already knew that the precision of 3D printing would be sufficient to fit the mechanical requirement of the pieces. For us, it was a really affordable way to solve a problem and fix a delay in the production process. For the first time at Withings, we thought of integrating 3D printed parts directly into the finished product.”

Within an hour of the first call, Sculpteo received the 3D files of the three components and instantly launched production of the first 100 units of each to ensure the file fitted the requirements.

After some minor production issues were solved, in just 24 hours Withings had verified the three pieces fitted the circuit board and Sculpteo was ready to launch a production run of several thousand.

Ouin continued:

“In the end, there were only a few iterations during the process. We came to Sculpteo with a precise need. We sent them the 3D file of our design, and they took care of the rest. A day later, they came to us to see if larger holes wouldn’t affect the requirements for the part. Since it was not an issue for us, we fixed the design and it went directly into production.”

The first reluctance about 3D printing generally comes from a misunderstanding about the technology and its cost. Clients come to Sculpteo with the idea that on the long term they will need to buy a 3D printer or even teach someone to handle the machine.

Sculpteo's 3D printing service allows clients to do the exact opposite. Customers just need to create an account on the website, fill in their payment information, and upload their 3D file.

By integrating 3D printing into the last steps of the industrial process, Withings was able to cut the production delay by at least two weeks. Within four days, the company was able to start producing its new Smart Body Analyzer, and had thousands units of each piece available for assembly while the industrial mold was being finished.

Automation Devices Upgrades Orienting Rolls

$

Source: Automation Devices, Inc.

Erie, PA, July 18, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Automation Devices, Inc. (ADI) has just released an updated version of their orienting rolls, product number 7700F. Orienting rolls, or orienting rollers, are used in conjunction with vibratory feeding systems to effectively orient and convey tapered or hanging parts in a quiet and gentle non-vibratory manner. The new design exceeds the previous model by improving the bearings and creating an overall more efficient system.

Orienting rolls are driven from a variable speed motor by way of an O-ring or cog type belt. The belt rides over pulleys, causing one roller to rotate clockwise and the other counterclockwise. This action breaks the friction between the parts and the rollers. The rollers are set at a slight angle so the parts flow downward and away from the point where they are dropped onto the rollers. Increased spacing between parts is often achieved, lending itself to other applications where parts are inspected or gauged.

ADI Project Designer, Dallas Holmes is happy with this product transition. “Our orienting rolls have now been designed to utilize the NSK™ self-aligning bearings. These are top quality bearings which gives our orienting rolls up to 7 degrees of adjustment on each roller,” explains Holmes. For example, on an 18 inch set of orienting rolls, the distance between the rolls could vary up to 3 inches from one end to the other without binding any of the support plates or bearings. This change will dramatically extend the life of the bearings, motors and belts. It will also allow the system to run at a cooler temperature with nearly silent operation. Energy consumption is also reduced because of less parasitic drag.

Orienting rollers are available in 18”, 24”, 36” and 48” lengths. Each roller is precision ground and hard chrome plated. Optional coatings can be applied for special applications such as handling food or pharmaceutical items. Abrasion-resistant coatings may also be applied to the rollers. ADI maintains orienting rolls as in stock items for fast delivery. Automation Devices Inc. produces a full line of tooled and untooled vibratory feeders and components including inline feeders, custom made tracks, level control switches, hoppers and inline feeders. They are located in Fairview, Pa just outside of Erie. They can be contacted at 814-474-5561 or view ADI products and services at www.autodev.com

Following an 8 percent increase from Q1 2013, 72 percent of respondents believe the US economy grew in the second quarter, up 10 points from the previous three months.

Additionally PwC US’ Q2 2013 Manufacturing Barometer shows sentiment towards the world economy remains guarded with only 31 percent expressing optimism and 59 percent indicating continued uncertainty.

PWC’s Global Manufacturing Current Assessment & Outlook also shows a reduction in overall pessimism among manufacturing executives compared to Q1, appearing to be driven by more bullishness over total sales, driven by the US.

US industrial manufacturing leader for PwC, Bobby Bono commented:

“There remains a persistent dichotomy in viewpoints regarding the outlooks for the US and world economies. Optimism regarding the domestic economy has increased, while worldwide economic sentiment remains restrained, with global uncertainty reaching the highest level in the past 12 months.

“The US is starting to show signs of healthy demand trends and improving pricing power, supporting positive overall sentiment in the year ahead. However, as a result of the mixed global outlook, combined with the moderate domestic recovery and the specter of increased legislative and regulatory pressures, management teams are continuing to carefully manage their costs, while maintaining a focus on growing profitably.”

In a reflection of the healthy level of optimism pertaining to the domestic economy, 82 percent of industrial manufacturers surveyed expect positive revenue growth for their own companies in the next 12 months, with only three percent forecasting negative growth. The projected average revenue growth rate over the next 12 months was 4.6 percent, up from 4.3 percent in the first quarter, but down from 5.6 percent in last year’s second quarter.

With regard to capital spending, 40 percent of respondents plan major new investments during the next 12 months, off three points from 43 percent in the first quarter, but well below the 55 percent recorded in the second quarter of 2012.

Plans for operational spending also remained notably below prior year levels. Looking at the next 12 months, 73 percent of respondents plan to increase operational spending, similar to 71 percent in the first quarter, but down from 87 percent in Q2 2012. Leading increased expenditures were new product or service introductions (45 percent) and R&D (38 percent).

Plans for geographic expansion remained low at 15 percent, up from 10 percent in the first quarter, but down significantly from 33 percent last year.

Bono continued:

“Sustained global uncertainty has likely led the way in fostering a more measured approach to capital spending, in conjunction with a return to more normalised spending patterns commensurate with the current stage of the post-recession cycle.

“We are also continuing to see little enthusiasm for overseas expansion, while management teams target spending primarily on R&D, new product launches and IT. This suggests they are focusing inward on innovation and leveraging their core strengths in a competitive domestic environment.”

According to the latest survey, 42 percent of industrial manufacturers plan to add employees to their workforce over the next 12 months, off three points from the first quarter. Only five percent plan to reduce the number of fulltime equivalent employees, and 53 percent will stay about the same.

Bono concluded:

“We’re seeing a significant moderation in concerns regarding energy costs among industrial manufacturers, consistent with other recent PwC studies. It appears that the increase in shale oil and gas production domestically is having a positive effect on energy costs and is now impacting strategic planning among some industrial manufacturers. This is a welcome development for management teams given the moderately growing economy and the continued emphasis on controlling costs.”

Cloud vs traditional software - Part 1 of 2

To read the latest issue of Manufacturing Digital, click here

Part 2 can be read here

With something as revolutionary as cloud computing, it is appropriate to compare and contrast that which software developers, designer/architects and others have experienced with cloud versus traditional software. The transformation of the software industry from traditional enterprise solutions to the cloud is one of these changes that deserve a review from that perspective.

If you look up cloud computing, you will find a dozen variations: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), etc. For most people, SaaS is the cloud computing layer that they best understand and are most likely to use. If you’ve run Salesforce.com or Google Apps, you’ve used SaaS products.

SaaS solutions normally utilise a multi-tenant architecture in which the application serves multiple businesses and users, while partitioning its data individually.

Since it sits in the middle of the cloud layers, PaaS is sometimes referred to as middleware. This PaaS layer contains virtual or cloud servers as well as operating systems, letting you develop, deploy and manage multi-tenant applications.

Although applications created on the traditional platform might be deployed through the Internet with resource-sharing technologies that provide a more balanced use of resources, they do not have the benefits of true SaaS or PaaS solutions because the traditional model simply can’t deliver the same benefits of cloud ERP, including lower costs, painless upgrades and a variety of other benefits. And, neither do the On-Premise/in-house, ASP and hosted suites which represent ‘traditional’ software.

Software experts’ views

Lance Ford and Sam Bhongale architected, designed and developed Insurance Applications for Valley Oak Systems/Aon. Their primary J2EE application for Claims and Policy Administrations was deployed in both On-Premise and ASP modes. Their current experience in PaaS solutions comes from deploying Rootstock Software’s manufacturing application on two different cloud platforms, NetSuite’s SuiteCloud and Salesforce’s Force.com.

According to Ford, for a developer, the productivity benefits of the cloud are significant and come with the platform, letting the developer focus on “meeting the business need”. Security, reliability/up-time, browser compatibility, platform performance/scaling and file system nuances become “nothing to worry about” when working on a PaaS platform.

Ford explains that both SuiteCloud and Force.com PaaS platforms have governance requirements that put controls on the resources the applications use, minimising the impact on the platform. Contrarily, traditional software development platforms provide no governance. Governance requirements are not necessarily a negative, though.

“Governance forces the developer to be efficient and not be sloppy,” says Ford. This has a downstream benefit of “fewer issues during Unit Testing, QA, and deployment.” Although all software development should use a proven testing methodology prior to release and deployment, Ford prefers the Force.com requirements that require all code to be compiled and have at least 75 percent code coverage prior to deployment.

Another big difference is that the setup of a new customer is markedly different between cloud applications and traditional solutions.

For traditional software, this could involve capacity planning, hardware and software acquisition and configuration – all which must be done before actual deployment of the application. After that, a separate software installation needs to occur, in addition to the setup of the data repository/database.

Conversely, to add a customer to the cloud, new deployment software is not required. The platform is already configured to have a new customer/tenant, utilising the existing application software and data structure. The advantages to both the customer and software provider become staggering when one considers providing solutions to hundreds or thousands of different customers.

Many software development organisations have gone to an ASP or hosted environment to provide a solution that, to the customer, might appear to be a cloud solution. These organisations want to say that their package is on the cloud. Unfortunately, these approaches have separate software and databases (not multi-tenant) so, from a software provider standpoint, the majority of the deployment and ongoing maintenance issues and costs still exist and, therefore, get passed onto the customer.

When hearing the word cloud ascribed to the software application, the buyer must ask the question: Is it multi-tenant?

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - July 19, 2013) - FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd. ("FLYHT") (TSX VENTURE:FLY) reported today that the AFIRS 228™ has been approved for use on the SITA network. The approval was the result of completion of SITA's VHF AIRCOM Qualification (VAQ) testing in Montreal, Canada. For AFIRS 228 to be qualified and validated to send Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) and other Datalink messages over the SITA network it was a requirement that the satcom system pass SITA's VAQ and compliance procedures.

Once these important milestones are passed we will start final acceptance testing at Airbus to be prepared for planned fourth quarter factory installations as FLYHT has stated previous."

Shipments of the products are planned to commence in the fourth quarter of 2013 with services commencing in 2014 with end users. Airbus currently produces in excess of 450 A320 aircraft per year and there are more than 5,000 aircraft in the A320 family of aircraft in service today.

Good Sam RV Travel Guide Names Top Family Campgrounds for 2013

$

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL--(Marketwired - July 19, 2013) -  Millions of families across North America are hitting the road in a recreational vehicle and leaving airlines and hotels in the dust. The Recreational Vehicle Industry (RVIA) recently reported that the number of RV-owning households in the United States has risen to a record 9 million, and roughly 40 percent of these have kids that are 18 years old or younger.

To help RVers find the parks best-suited for family play and relaxation, Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Campground Directory has compiled a list of the top family RV Parks (see list at bottom) for 2013. Boasting campgrounds from Alberta, Canada, to the Emerald Coast of Florida, this list of 52 RV parks is tailored for RV travelers seeking campgrounds that help them get away from the stresses of everyday life.

Each park on the list boasts unique qualities that make it a special vacation destination. At Normandy Farms Family Campground in Foxboro, Massachusetts, families can participate in an Easter egg hunt, a Mother's Day weekend and Fourth of July celebration. In Warrens, Wisconsin, the staff organizes themed activity weeks, such as Wild West Week and Yogi's Birthday Week. Some RV parks create a whimsical environment.

Regardless of where families stay, it's apparent that this demographic will only get bigger. Over the past few years, RV buyers in the 35-to-54 age group have posted the largest ownership growth, outpacing so-called "empty nesters," according to the RVIA. And as more families realize that RVing gives them the flexibility to take quick getaways that don't interfere with busy family schedules, more families are bound to hit the road.
